Inanna's Descent

In this earliest of resurrection stories, the Sumerian fertility Goddess Inanna descends to the "Great Below" and three days later rises from her death. However, demons of the Underworld cling to her and force her to choose a loved one to take her place. In retelling Inanna's story, Christine Andreae has crafted the translated poems into a coherent narrative for the modern reader. The story is illustrated with twenty of the author's original woodcuts.
