This is the first of a series of short stories I am going to release for the Dark Seas universe. If you've read Sarah Dayson's story, which is the main novels, there are several events that don't get addressed in the books, but are pivotal moments.
Valor at Hamor is one of those. The Seventh Fleet, under Dayson's command, needs to retreat from the devastating beating their battle group is taking at Hamor. Enemy ships are closing, and she only has a small time to remain if she wants to save her warships from destruction. She gives ships in the area fifteen minutes to get into position for the retreat, but some ships in the Seventh are too far out to return in time.
The Mongol and Vixen, two heavy cruisers, are among those over an hour away. Knowing the two warships can't make it in time, she asks them to either find a way out with another fleet, or to intercept the enemy threatening the Seventh and engage them despite being outnumbered.
This short story is the details of that engagement, the Mongol and Vixen's stand so that their friends might live, told from the viewpoint of a grappler (think fighter) crew on the scene.
I hope you enjoy it, and while this will give you a taste of my writing, it draws heavily on the story presented in Book 1 of the Dark Seas series. I encourage you to read that first.
Genre: Science Fiction
