As the days wound down to the end of October I’d been feeling more and more antsy. My skin prickled as if something watched me, but when I turned around--no one was there. Mr. Yow seemed to see things in corners where there was nothing but dust. And my dreams were dark and disturbing.Mrs. Haversham said that it was simply Halloween coming in on the air. Halloween--a night when anything could happen--the gates between the worlds could open, spells could crash, and the dead could come knocking.
She might be right. It might just be the night coming on the cool fall wind But it could also be that this Halloween I was irrevocably and magically bound to a crumbling old Inn whose wooden bones were steeped in magic. All I knew was that as the day approached and the magic of the season grew, the Inn felt more and more alive. It was only natural I was spooked. But I couldn’t help feeling like maybe it was something beside the holiday that had me jumping at ghosts like they were shadows.
I just wish I knew what it was.
