Penny Saver

(2015)
A Story by

This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.

Penny is mostly happy. She has a steady job, two normal kids, and a husband who works the night shift. But when, out of the blue, her best friend calls to say that she's dropped everything to follow her dreams, Penny begins to question her own life choices and whether a different, better happiness is within reach.

Inspired, Penny quits her job of twenty years to pursue her passion: making and selling ceramic piggy banks. Of course, she's only ever taken one ceramics class and doesn't really know how to operate a kiln. Still, her husband is supportive - until he loses his job and the family suddenly finds itself depending on a half-baked dream. Told with uncomfortable honesty, Penny Saver is the story of stubborn, irresponsible optimism in the glaring face of reality.
