Sometimes, one time … is all it takes.Initially created to incentivize the God-fearing, “The Exodus” -a government-enforced relocation project-transformed into an all-out genocide targeting the sexually wicked and bastard children. Transported by cattle cars, everyone was thrown into respective barracks, internment and conversion camps based on their beliefs and lifestyles.
With no immediate living family to help, Angie Hasilin, a nineteen-year-old farm girl, is placed in The Puritan’s Camp for Future Homemakers. Although this appears to be promising placement at first, the inhumane treatment and murders of her peers break her spirits.
After learning about the displacement and maltreatment of his childhood friend, Gustafa Camar, a young politician, knows he has to do something. Fearing her death certificate would be the next to land on his desk, he exploits the concubine-issuing program, known as the Gift Exchange, to save her from the murderous “training” camp.
Even though his initial intentions were innocent, after learning to live together, they soon start falling for one another. However, when old rumors regarding Gustafa’s sexuality, or lack thereof, resurface, the couple makes a hasty decision: One that will forever change life as they know it.
Given both a deadline and an ultimatum, Gus must decide between doing what is legal and doing what is right. After he chooses the latter, the higher-ranked Superior Holt, hell-bent on pushing his agenda, refuses to turn a blind eye. Wanting Gus to be punished for his political beliefs, the Superior calls for a tribunal that will determine the couple’s fate.
