In this newest Anglo Norman mystery, a nun is murdered in an abbey and Estrid conducts an investigation into her death.
When a nun is found slain in the precincts of Malling Abbey in Kent, Estrid is asked by Gundulf, the bishop of the see, to go to Malling and investigate the crime. Upon her arrival at the abbey, she is confronted by a haughty Norman abbess who resents her authority being challenged by an Englishwoman. Nonetheless, supported by the bishop’s dictate, she begins the enquiry and soon discovers that the murdered girl had many enemies, not only within the nunnery but also the village. Treading carefully within the boundaries laid down by the hierarchy of the church, and the complex relationships among the villagers, she is finally led to the truth and is forced to take desperate measures to unveil the identity of the killer.
