David's assistant, Lisa, has discovered that David has no birth certificate. Dave shrugs it off by repeating that his mother had told him that the Los Angeles hospital where he was born had a fire. Lisa is unconvinced and begins investigating the circumstances. The more she learns the more questionable his mother's story seems. David resists her interference. Then an aged relative dies in Los Angeles and David needs to attend the funeral. Lisa comes along and together they begin the process of unraveling what really happened 45 years ago. The story is based on my own search for my birth parents in real life. The point of view is alternating first person, with David and Lisa each narrating some chapters. When the book was written in 1996 I was intending to stop the series there, and I felt this represented a very satisfying end point. The new edition is slightly rewritten and eliminates a side plot that that was not essential to the action; the main plot is unchanged.
