Burnt Offerings are a collection of spiritual poems written and collected over two years to inspire, bring hope, and perhaps a chuckle.
In the words of Peter Daly, Syndicated Columnist, Catholic News Service:
"When it comes to writing about the life of the Spirit, philosophy is good and theology is useful. But poetry is better, because it is like music. It does not try to analyze or rationalize. It just points in the direction of mystery.
"Peter Abresch is a poet of the life of the Spirit. He points in the direction of the mystery of God. His poems do what prayer is meant to do. They lift the heart and mind to God. His images are always concrete and make sense. His humor is light. In a few short lines he offers us encouragement. He reassures us that our own feelings and prayers are not misplaced. Love is the over riding theme, divine love for us and all creation, human love as a reflection of divine love.
"Philosophers, theologians and clergy can take many more words to say the same things; Peter Abresch gets us to heart of the questions in a few lines. They will lift your spirit to God and brighten your day. They are better than philosophy or theology.
So why Burnt Offerings?
In the scheme of eternity, our lives are but whiffs of smoke, if that. Even so, if we can get a touch of God's love, and a burst of His laughter, a sense of our relationship with Him, we can snap our fingers at time and space. God's love for us is higher than the stars above the grass of the fields, in time and length and breadth and depth. So ignore the planets and galaxies that show such disdain for us. Instead dip your bucket in the water of hope and drink so your heart overflows. After all, we do not rule the universe.
But our Father does.
