Excerpt: A Warship Named Sky 3

Tye turned to Francois, “Is the new system working effectively?”
“It’s working beyond my wildest expectations. We’ve already made more than three billion in profits and the amount is growing each week”
“Is that enough capital to prevent the coming collapse?”
Francois’s eyes narrowed and he asked, “How do you know about that?”
“You need to keep in mind that I’ve been an order taker for the Zon for years. Something has changed in the number of orders being taken and it isn’t good.”
“No, it won’t prevent the collapse.”
“What collapse are you talking about?!” Sissy asked.
“Tell me why you can’t stop it with the additional capital, Francois!” Tye interrupted.
“My company does not produce the products that are sold; we only provide the supply lines that deliver them out to the two galaxies. The issue we’re facing is that the products being shipped have been greatly curtailed on numerous planets. Without those products, the collapse is certain.”
“Couldn’t you use the new capital to build manufacturing facilities to make the needed products?” Tye asked.
Francois shook his head, “Tye, billions of planets produce those products and if we started producing the products it would speed up the collapse when those planets rebelled at our taking over their economies.”
“So where are the products going?”
Francois raised a shoulder, “I have no idea.”
Tye sat back and asked, “And if things continue as they are, what will happen?”
“There will be a great depression and the prosperous economies that have been enjoyed over the last five hundred years will collapse causing starvation on billions of planets. Trillions will die in the aftermath and the galaxies will see wars break out among the civilizations to take what they need to survive.”
Tye stared at Francois and asked, “Can it be stopped?”
“I have no idea how it’s happening much less how to stop it.”
“Why haven’t you told me about this?” Sissy asked.
Francois turned to her, “I believe just one of us having nightmares is enough.”
