Fading Memories

(2022)
A novel by

Grant was dying and he knew it. Cancer has a habit of getting you in the end. Having suffered from cancer in pre-Covid days, he thought the disease was either in remission or gone altogether. It was neither; instead, it lurked somewhere inside him and manifested itself during the lockdown.

It reached the terminal stage before he knew it.

He had just months - it had spread throughout his body, but not yet to his brain.

He was prepared to say goodbye to his wife and son but was then given a choice.

"You want me to be a guinea pig?" he asked.

They did - a wealthy client of a new Cryogenics company was willing to invest in the company, but needed some assurances that their system worked.

What better way than to offer a dying man hope - a slim hope that he could be put to sleep and awoken when they had developed a cure?

They paid him a large sum to be that guinea pig, but he still said goodbye to his family, not really believing it would work, but better this than a long and miserable death.

They woke him up two thousand years later.

'They' were part of an expedition from a colony world that was light years from Earth. They returned to see if the old place was habitable and whether anyone survived.

"Earth' - the cradle of mankind that was dying and from which many of the elite had left in the Great Exodus, leaving behind those less fortunate to try to exist on this dying world.

The catch - they couldn't cure his cancer, but someone else had come up with a better idea at some point.

Before the place crumbled into ruins, medical science had developed the answer to many problems - Grant found himself facing a future in a synthetic body.

One more catch -

The body was designed for a female.
