The main characters, who are designed to resemble fairy-tale figures, can be found in this novel which contains a great variety of characters and different perceptions: Mr. Rile, who suddenly leaves and comes back even more unexpectedly; Mrs. Rile, whose mouth gave God the "weird idea of sin", according to local rumours; Pekish, inventor and operator of a strange device; Pechd, an orphan who experienced life through numbered notes and is waiting to grow up so that his jacket fits him; Hector Oro, an architect who claimed that he could ameliorate the world by constructing buildings made of glass; Mormy, the illegitimate child of Mr. Rile, with the dark complexion; Aberg, a widow who had never been married and Bonetti an engineer, a character that combines rationality and irrationality in a unique way.
