Nellie has a dream where she is young again and back in the hospital where her father died. She meets a woman who tells her a bit about the shadow monster after them, but the woman speaks in parables and doesn’t understand her fully. She deciphers from the old woman's message their next location and heads to the Todai-ji temple. At the temple, they meet a monk who tells them more about the past history of the temple and shows them a room where some old monks were kept when the shadow monster infected them. Nellie and the others go inside the room. They find claw marks on the wall of the room, alongside bloodstains. There is a memoir written on the wall, and it leads them to a secret door in the room. They open it, and it leads to another temple. In the temple, they are visited by the shadow thing, which demands something of Nellie. Nellie refuses and it attacks. Nellie suddenly stops breathing, and Lanny and Jasmine think she’s dead.
