This highly readable novel revolves around a train crash, whilst also dealing with divisions and tensions in society in the inter-war years. Bennett began writing the novel in 1926, the year of the general strike, but far from being pessimistic about eventual outcomes, he ends on an optimistic note and a belief in a bright future once the current dificulties are given a true perspective.
