Catherine Bowness has moved on a few years from the Regency into the Victorian era and introduces a new character, the Earl of Rushlake. He is a man in possession of a fortune, who finds himself at a loose end after he comes down from university. By chance he meets an intriguing young woman and, only a few days later, hears that she has disappeared in the company of the Earl of Fletton. The obvious explanation – that she has run away with him – is hotly denied by her sister, Lady Clarissa Turnbull, who is beside herself with anxiety.
Their brother, Lord Witherenden, seeks help from Scotland Yard and it is after he has been questioned by Mr Bodley, a detective, that Lord Rushlake takes it upon himself to make enquiries among his peers. The upshot is that he travels to Yorkshire, where he stays with his great aunt, Lady Amberstone, an old lady with a lively mind.
The book follows the fortunes of the widowed Lady Clarissa as well as the missing woman, Lady Georgina. It also describes the progress Lord Rushlake, his aunt and Mr Bodley make in solving the mystery.
