Emma Crosthwaite is used to being pitied. A spinster in their small village after her betrothed eloped with her sister, she is an object of pity or ridicule. Attending the St. Nicholas Day gathering that would begin the holiday celebration in earnest, she makes a desperate attempt to escape the overwhelming number of watchful eyes and the unwelcome attentions of a man she finds detestable only to stumble into the arms of another man altogether. A man who stirs many feelings in her, none of which are unpleasant.
Devlin Barrowcliff is new to the countryside. An unexpected inheritance has taken him from the busy life of a London solicitor to the leisurely life of a landed gentleman. Having so much time on his hands has only made him realize how empty his life had been. But a chance encounter under the mistletoe has given him hope for a very different kind of life.
Not everyone is happy to see Emma well settled. Despite her sweet nature, or perhaps because of it, she is the object of unreasonable jealousy and wicked intentions and he will do whatever is necessary to protect her and the future they will have together.
