Once the chief of police's son-in-law, then a police officer, and finally a private detective before his "great fall" as Chief describes his life-changing injury involving a fire escape sustained during an investigation, Hank continues to offer his skills in finding the truth, made easier by the fact that he has a foot in both ends of the social classes—from his family's position in high society to his friendships with everyone from the mayor to a homeless woman who "sees" things others don't always observe.

When a well-known philanthropist and supporter of the local art museum falls to his death, questions arise, especially in relation to a painting and who will inherit it. Hank is asked by the chief to snoop around to answer the questions. Was it suicide or was he pushed? Is the painting an actual Manet? Who is the rightful owner of the painting now? And most important, where is it? Join Hank in this noir comedy, written in the style of Dashiell Hammett, as he maneuvers his way through the web of intrigue to the answers.
