Diane Marie Brown recommends
Strange Folk (2024)
Alli Dyer
"In this bewitching debut, not only do we bear witness to 'folk' who call on the strange and supernatural to change fortunes, we also see the magic of forgiveness, grace, and purpose. With warmth and fervor, Dyer masterfully delivers a powerful story about flawed and gifted beings as they struggle to navigate both the natural and mystical worlds."
Acts of Forgiveness (2024)
Maura Cheeks
"Acts of Forgiveness is a vibrant and moving debut that takes to heart our deferred dreams and the value of remaining hopeful. Cheeks's layered and tender story allows us to witness a family's journey as they plant seeds, dig up roots, and bloom, all while they contend with injustices and fight for redemption in the world around them."
Hush Harbor (2023)
Anise Vance
"Hush Harbor examines the monumental task of resisting empathy and confronting the brutal patterns that allow injustices to survive. Anise Vance delivers with a cast of vibrant characters who converge in a rich setting, each seeking the best way to correct some of the world's wrongs. In doing so, they give up their own comfort, dreams, safety, and peace, pushed into survival mode while wrestling with their own relationships and personal histories. Cinematically told, this debut takes off from page one and doesn't slow its pace, just as do the book's heroines and heroes."
