Everybody likes a ghost story—until you’re living it.
Reporter Cassidy James has already learned that lesson and she is reluctant to become involved in another spectral encounter.
Yet when Jedediah Morton, the self-appointed gatekeeper of “the Dark,” the swamp swallowing up the old Fun Valley Amusement Park, warns her about “the things that live in them woods,” Cassidy is tempted by his tale. He entreats her to free the spirit of his wife, who disappeared there decades ago. His wife’s body came out, but Jed insists her soul never did. His warning and more recent disappearances in the Dark intrigue Cassidy. But if she ventures beyond the sanctioned swamp paths, will she write a winning story about the wraith who wanders the woods, or pen her own epitaph?
The End of Summer is a fine shivery tale between the warm waning picnic days and the frosty advent of Autumn. A follow-up to Byerrum’s The Last Goodbye of Harris Turner.
Genre: Horror
