In 1864 the family of Wyatt Earp left the strong Unionist community of Pella, Iowa due to Wyatt's father's Southern background. He'd been a supporter of the Lincoln administration until the Emancipation Proclamation. He and other former Southerners saw it as pauperizing their old friends in the South and spoke out against it, engendering community friction that prompted them to move on. They went West across parts of the Oregon Trail, then through Mormon country to San Bernardino, California, encountering a lot of Indian trouble enroute, to add to the hardships of the trail. Based on diaries of those who went with them, including Wyatt's own recollections dictated in the 1920's, a few years before his death.
