Gabriella Burnham recommends
Land of No Regrets (2024)
Sadi Muktadir
"Land of No Regrets is a nostalgic tale about young friendship between four Muslim boys, imbued with a rollicking, modern personality. Muktadir writes with tenderness and humor, and he allows space for a textured culture and shared histories, even at the story's most heart-wrenching moments. I left feeling as though I'd known these boys my entire life."
Dogs of Summer (2022)
Andrea Abreu
"Andrea Abreu's characters, like her sentences, are bold and wild. Reminiscent of Marieke Lucas Rijneveld's The Discomfort of Evening, Abreu's writing twirls and clacks with tactile precision, like winding a cassette tape with a No. 2 pencil. I'll return to Dogs of Summer whenever I crave a searing, brutal shot of life."
The Old Woman with the Knife (2022)
Gu Byeong-mo
"The Old Woman with the Knife is a wild thrill of a novel. I found myself clutching my chest as I turned each page: from fright, heartbreak, and from the devastating gallows humor. It is about revenge and retribution, aging and death, and the quotidian woes of a bureaucratic job - even if that job is murder-for-hire. Hornclaw, our 65-year-old assassin main character, defies expectations: she is brutal, thoughtful, and almost as tender as her beloved dog, Deadweight, who truly steals the show."
