249pp , IN ENGLISH. ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Gina Berriault (1 January 1926-15 July 1999) from , was an American novelist and short story writer . Berriault born in Long Beach, California, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents . His father was a freelance writer and Berriault was inspired by him , using his stand -up typewriter to write his first stories while still in elementary school . Berriault had a career of prolific writer , which includes stories, novels and screenplays . His writing tended to focus on life in and around San Francisco. He has published four novels and three collections of short stories, including women in their beds : New Stories and selected (1996 ) , which won the PEN / Faulkner, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Book Bay Area Reviewers Award. In 1997 he was chosen as winner Berriault Rea Award for short story , for outstanding achievements in the genre . Berriault taught writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop and San Francisco State University. He also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a scholarship Guggenheim , one Ingram -Merrill scholarship, the Gold Medal of the Commonwealth of Literature, the Pushcart Prize and several O'Henry awards. He adapted his story " The Stone Boy" for a film of the same title , published in 1984. [2 ] The same story was adapted by another writer for a television appearance , 1960. [3 ] Berriault died in 1999 at age 73 in the Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae , California.
