Valerian is one of the many aristocratic Dorning brothers. The Dorning estate is not money rich therefore the younger sons have to make their own way in life at the best of abilities. Valerian has charming manners, is a nice man and a true gentleman. He is the brother who can resolve others problems in a calm and sensible fashion, yet Valerian has little personal self esteem and views his own abilities as having little worth in comparison to his other brothers. Valerian is a born diplomat and as such should be in the diplomatic service, however that does not seem to have occurred to either himself or his brother the Earl. Valerian falls in love with Miss Emily Pepper, the only daughter of a wealthy silk merchant, which to Valerian is a major difficulty as he is no fortune hunter, however Miss Pepper's family have secrets which need resolving before a truely happy outcome can be made. A lovely, interesting book and a lovely man.
