From the moment Selina Brewse returns to her former home, the tower house of the centuries-old Nun's Castle, to convalesce after a car accident, she senses a menace. She is alone at Nun's Castle. The cousins who once shared it with her are gone: Lynnet has disappeared, leaving an enigmatic note; Joe has died of a heart attack there in the tower, willing the house and its vast surrounding lands to Selina and Lynnet. Anxious to find Lynnet, Selina is frustrated at every turn. Her neighbors in this lovely English countryside evade her questions. Two men, each professing to love her, give her conflicting advice and warnings. There is an ominous telephone call, and slivers of glass are found in her cold cream jar. More disturbing, Selina receives a copy of a marriage license, with her name as wife, but the husband's name blocked out. Selina's accident has brought recurring spells of amnesia, but could she have forgotten anything as important as her own marriage? And who is her "husband"? The threats and warnings suddenly crescendo into deadly action. Someone who knows Selina well and knows the ancient house, from its underground storage rooms to the tower, hates her. When Selina believes she sees Lynnet at the top of the stairs and runs to meet her, she narrowly avoids falling to her death when she trips over loosened floorboards. A doctor who has promised to tell her something about Lynnet's disappearance is murdered before Selina can keep her appointment with him. But with a chilling discovery in a passageway under the tower, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place. Now Selina knows why someone wants her dead, and who that someone is. In a desperate gamble she forces a confrontation to solve the strange mystery that had its beginnings in Nun's Castle seven hundred years ago.
