One winter's night in 1940, while the Blitz is raging, a bomb guts the six little houses in Pedlar's Row, Bermondsey. Miraculously, no one is killed and local folk feel that Lady Luck was keeping her eye on them that night. Six years later, the Row is home to a close-knit community counting its blessings to have survived the war intact - and full of curiosity about the new family moving into number three. Laura Prior isd unmarried at the age of thirty-four; she has been busy caring for her invalid father while sister Lucy is at work - her husband, Roy, is till in a Japanese POW camp. Laura enjoys the excitement of her new life in Pedlar's Row - not least, because of her growing, attraction to doctor Billy Cassidy. Her sister Lucy finds life harder, having to contend with an emotionally scarred Roy, and her guilt about a war-time affair.
