Sara Rushden had happy memories of her grandparents' home, Rylands, so when she was left the cottage in her grandfather's will she decided to abandon her city job to live there and write books for children. Her neighbors at Marlyn Manor were the Rannock family. Paul Rannock was a frail recluse, scarred emotionally as well as physically by his experiences as an explorer. Helping Mr. Rannock to write his memoirs brought Sarah into open hostility with his son, Simon, who was opposed to his father reliving painful memories.
