Dead Lion
(2021)(The second book in the Mandrake Mystery series)
A novel by Emery Bonett and John Bonett
Cyprian Druse is a literary lion, but he is not a good man.
As a critic he is grudgingly respected, but as an individual – given to cruelty and manipulation – he is loathed. So, nobody is very upset when he is found dead. The police say it was an accident.
But not everyone agrees with the police. Simon Crane, Druse's nephew, suspects murder. Druse's vituperative pen had destroyed many reputations and several women fell victim to his egocentric ruthlessness. The literary lion was in truth a viper and Crane sets out to discover – with the help of fellow sleuth Professor Mandrake – the real story behind Druse's demise.
First published in 1949, Dead Lion is a must-read for fans of crime fiction from the genre’s golden age.
‘Dead Lion is an exquisitely crafted classical mystery. But besides providing a satisfying puzzle, like its many Golden Age predecessors, this novel also features three-dimensional, modern characters with psychological quirks and motivations. With small touches, the authors also manage to convey what life was like in England after the war’ – Kathleen L. Maio, mysteryfile.com
‘Most exhilarating’ - New Statesman
‘A most civilized piece of escapism. It is urbane, amusing and readable...’ - Sunday Times
John and Emery Bonett were a British husband-and-wife writing team, celebrated for numerous mystery and detective novels in the post-war years.
