Kerry Barrett was a bookworm from a very early age, devouring Enid Blyton and Noel Streatfeild, before moving on to Sweet Valley Highand 1980s bonkbusters. She did a degree in English Literature, then trained as a journalist, writing about everything from pub grub to EastEnders. Her first novel, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, took six years to finish and was mostly written in longhand on her commute to work, giving her a very good reason to buy beautiful notebooks. Kerry lives in London with her husband and two sons, and Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes is still her favourite novel.

Kerry Barrett recommends

Grace of the Empire State (2025)
Gemma Tizzard
"This is a gorgeous, evocative story about the struggles of building a city from the ground up - literally! Grace is a bold, brave heroine and her adventures on the steels of the Empire State Building are so vividly described that they made me feel dizzy! I loved the 1930s New York setting, the brilliantly drawn cast of characters and their gritty resilience, and the romance. And the theme of immigrants working hard and making their mark on their new home really resonates in today's society. I thoroughly enjoyed this thought-provoking, entertaining read."

A Girls' Guide to Winning the War (2024)
Annie Lyons
"This book is a delight! A warm hug of a story with gorgeous characters who felt like friends... Loved it!"

All the Lights Above Us (2022)
M B Henry
"A thoughtful, thought-provoking and gripping story that made me re-think what I thought I knew about the war."
