Whan Claude Wooldridge, a mildy shady antique dealer who has acquired an antiquarian bookshop, discovers a cache of old letters, it starts him on a trail that ends with him alone in a crumbling Neopolitan palazzo, his marriage in ruins, his career abandoned, planning his suicide. For the letters seem to reveal the possible whereabouts of the legendary memoirs of Lord Byron, the great lost treasure of English literature. The further Wooldridge travels in their pursuit, the harder it becomes for him - and the reader - to distinguish between what is real and what is fake.
