Defender of the Faith
(1911)(The second book in the William and Mary series)
A novel by Marjorie Bowen
Following on from I will Maintain, this is the second part of the William and Mary Trilogy telling the eventful life of William III, Prince of Orange, Stadtholder of the United Netherlands, and King of England. This is one of the most fascinating stories in history brought to life.
The now infamous political rivalry of the 17th century continues, as William tries to persuade England to join the Netherlands against France's aggression. William is pitted against Charles II as he wages war with France only to find that his allies are few.
As William makes gains in the Provences it seems not all is lost, but will peace come at too high a cost? Can a compromise ever be a true victory?
"The author is well-known for her well-researched fiction based on the lives of famous historical characters. The religious convictions of the main characters are portrayed with authenticity and integrity. This book is sure to enrich one's understanding of Protestant Holland and will hold the reader spell-bound." - F. Pronk
Marjorie Bowen was born in 1885 and is one of many pseudonyms the writer Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long used. She was one of Britain's most prolific authors of the twentieth century. Writing was more than just a hobby: her works were the primary source of financial support for her family. Between 1906 and her death in 1952, Bowen wrote over 150 books, garnering much acclaim for her popular histories and historical and Gothic romances. Alongside masterful descriptions and concise, efficient prose, she deftly rendered larger-than-life subjects in the minds of her readers. To this day, aficionados of the genres covet Bowen's work. Her other titles include The Sword Decided, Mary Queen of Scots, The Queen's Caprice, The Governor of England, Mistress Nell Gwynn and Dickon.
