The three short novels in this new Max Brand trio compose the story of Joe Good and his struggle against the Altons who control most of the ranch land in the valley of the Cronin Mountains around Fort Willow. When Joe's father, Vincent Good, is accused of attempted murder, he is executed by a posse made up of Alton's men. Joe is financed by Zeke Stevens who has his own score to settle with the Altons. His friendship with Budge Morrissey, a black man and professional thief, becomes tested when Budge is imprisoned. Joe is not good with a gun but he is lightning with a blacksnake, and in his hand it is a weapon that causes his enemies to cower in fear. In the course of his struggle Joe gains another ally, Katherine Garnet, originally sought in marriage by Harry Alton. Katherine's break with the Altons becomes only one more score the clan has to settle with Joe Good and all those who side him.
