The Case of the Cosmic Corpse
(2024)(The first book in the Quera Valise Space Barista Mysteries series)
A novel by Sara Bourgeois
My name is Quera Valise, and as a barista aboard the U.S.S. Neptune, I thought I was living the dream. Sure, slinging coffee for intergalactic diplomats and explorers lightyears from home wasn't glamorous, but the Neptune was my whole world.
Not the planet, the ship. It can be confusing, but you'll get used to it.
I work in one of this ship's coffee shops. That's right, I made it all the way off Planet Earth... to work as a barista.
Anyway, the Neptune has anything you could ever want, literally. It's like an entire small town hurtling through space at speeds of I don't actually know. Again, barista. But I can make you a white chocolate mocha so good it will make you forget your name.
I get to travel to places most people only dreamed of going. Life was pretty good.
Until I stumbled over a body one night while I took out the shop's trash. Lucky for me, it was my ex-friend, Nix Raelle. The one who stole my boyfriend.
So that is how me and my ex-boyfriend Zavyr became suspects in a murder investigation. He could suck eggs for all I cared, but I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in the ship's prison.
Or worse yet, dropped off on one of the many prison planets, never to see the Earth, the Neptune, or my cat Roswell ever again.
By the way, we're not allowed pets on the ship, so Roswell is a stowaway. I don't know what fate would befall the little fluffball if anything happened to me.
So that's where I'm at. The ship's law enforcement isn't used to dealing with murders, and I've got to pull out all the stops and solve the crime myself. But my attempts to clear my name irritate none other than Officer McDreamy himself, Davion Maxtom.
With an ex-friend who's now a corpse, an ex-boyfriend who's now a suspect, and a stowaway cat to protect, I've got my work cut out for me. Officer McDreamy thinks I'm just a pesky barista sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. Little does he know I've read every mystery novel in the ship's library. If anyone can get to the bottom of this murder, it's me.
But I can't do it alone. I'll need help from my coworkers, friends, and even a few enemies. There's no shortage of secrets and intrigue aboard the Neptune. With every new clue, I uncover another layer of deceit. How deep does this mystery go? Turns out, this ship has more drama than an asteroid field.
One thing's for sure - I'd better solve this case fast before the murderer decides I know too much. Between brewing lattes, evading Officer McDreamy, and keeping Roswell hidden, I've got the galaxy's biggest mystery on my hands. Can this small-town barista play detective and find the killer before they come for me next? Buckle up because we're about to adventure across the stars and into danger. Space has never been so deadly!
Genre: Cozy Mystery
