Valerie Whitley:
I can't believe I'm being blackmailed by my ninety-year old grandmother into marrying her best friend's grandson!
My best friend, Caleb, left home years ago, leaving me behind to wonder what I did wrong. Why did he leave me without a word? He promised me we'd always be best friends and then he ghosted me.
He came home and went to work at Wildwood Construction, completely ignoring me.
Now my grandmother wants me hitched to him or she's going to cut off my parents' funds. I can't do what she asks. It hurts too much knowing that he's being forced into this. But I can't let my parents try to handle things on their own. Neither of them have ever had a job.
I want to stand on my own two feet and take care of myself. Caleb says he'll take care of me, that he'll do what she wants. But I just can't trust him not to disappear all over again. I can't trust him with what's left of my heart from the first time he broke it.
Caleb Mercer:
I don't know how it happened. All I know is that I met Valerie in the sixth grade and fell in love with my best friend somewhere along the way. Her parents wanted her to have a good life though so they asked me to walk away and let her go to college. Let her live her dreams. Dreams that couldn't include me.
She went to college but never finished. Instead, she came home after a year, broken and bruised figuratively. Her confidence was shaken and she just never seemed to get over it.
She's still the woman I want. When her grandmother comes to me with a deal that I can't refuse, it doesn't take much to get me on board with her plan. It's shady and risky but if it works, I get the woman of my dreams and she knows that I'll always look out for Valerie. I'll always protect her. Even from her parents machinations.
If it works, how do I keep Valerie from finding out that I was in on the plans? And if she does, will she ever forgive me? Will she ever love me the way I love her?
