In the time of unrest shortly before the American War Of Independence, John Foster, an entrepreneur American, sets out to make the arduous sea journey across the Atlantic ocean, to England. His intension is to meet his benefactor and business partner Sir Thomas Wainwright, who wants John to cast his discerning eye over his beautiful, headstrong daughter, Linnett Wainwright with a view to marriage. John's first impression of this spoilt and arrogant girl, is that she won't suit as his wife but after spending some time with the aristocratic beauty, he decides that her strong character would stand her in good stead, helping her to cope with the untamed rigours of the less civilised Colonies. However, John fails to take into account Linnett's determined and independent spirit.
