Space Men, Volume 1 of the Lost Sky Trilogy, is set in a contemporary world that could have happened, almost happened, but didn't quite, alternate history hard science fiction detailing the 1990 - 2010 era as it might have been, from the great Gulf War of 1990 - 1994 to the very different space program that emerges after the turn of the century. Harry Maddox is a blue-collar slacker scalawag, a marine machinery mechanic working his life away in a government submarine repair yard. In the wake of a terrible accident at Space Station Freedom, NASA is abolished, replaced by a new, top-secret space program, whose work will be done by the hard-hatted men and women of Aquaiah Naval Shipyard, somewhere in an imaginary corner of Chesapeake Bay. Harry and his friends, whatever dreams they may have had, will now be doing their jobs in outer space.
