Rae Spears, a neurosurgeon, is reeling from the suicide of her husband, Stuart, when she is approached by an old lover, Ted Rimmer, a detective with the Manchester Police Force. Rimmer asks for her specialist appraisal of a murder suspect called Terry Farrell who is exhibiting neurological symptoms. Is he faking? Or is he really ill? Rae’s opinion might decide whether or not Farrell is responsible for the brutal killings of two women in Manchester.
Rae believes that he is innocent, but the police remain sure of his guilt. Rae becomes determined to defend him and her stand causes aggravation between her and Rimmer and even the hospital where she works.
Further evidence comes to light and Rae changes her opinion, now believing that Farrell is guilty.
Hounded by the press, shunned by those she worked with but mostly haunted by the death of Stuart, Rae finds her equilibrium shaken to the point of doubting her own decisions. With nothing to lose, and knowing she is risking her reputation and her own safety, Rae sets out to find the killer and vindicate herself: a journey which takes her into the darkness alone.
