Haunted by the loss of his twin sister, Edward Dadd goes to work as an assistant to the enigmatic Aubrey Taverner, who has put an advert in The Times:
Experiences bought for research.
Payment according to story.
Anyone may apply.
In the suffocating atmosphere of Cook's Alley, Edward records the many different experiences that Taverner buys. And gradually, as he reads the macabre tales, he wonders why the stories are being collected.
At first, Edward is willingly drawn into Taverner's life but soon finds himself trapped - even sharing a lover with his employer - whilst being sucked deeper and deeper into a world he cannot understand.
But when Edward's curiosity threatens to uncover The Experience Buyer's real motive, Taverner warns him off. Confused, Edward persists. Some of the clients try to protect him and even his dead sister tries to alert him from the grave - but nothing stops him. And then, at the end of a long, eerie summer in Cook's Alley, Edward finally discovers what Taverner really wants.
