The east gate at Yellowstone National Park is closed for the winter—except for a single day in December. What can happen in only one day?
Special Agent Ricki James stands in a forest surrounded by trees, snow, and blood. On the one day the park's east gate was open during the winter, a visiting, six-member film crew was ambushed and brutally murdered at the start of a scenic trail. And so was Park Ranger Daria Adler, the love interest of a long-time friend, and who was assigned to accompany the visitors. Which makes this case a personal one.
With seven bodies, no clues, and no motive, all Ricki knows is that she’s searching for someone who can move soundlessly through an ice-covered forest and is at home in the back county. And that means she can’t rule out the other park rangers.
When she finally gets a lead on two witnesses, they turn up dead at the hand of a killer who has no trouble cleaning up loose ends. Or taking a cold, deadly aim at the investigator relentlessly pursuing him.
