Gr 5-8 Marcy Kirk is an aspiring underachiever in a family of overachievers. Her mother is the town mayor; her father is a successful businessman; her siblings are stellar at school, jobs, everything. To rebel, Marcy drops all of her after-school lessons and decides to become something her family regards as worthless and contemptiblea cheerleader. After her first unsuccessful attempt, her family rallies to Marcy's now genuine interest. They encourage her, acknowledge the sincerity of her efforts, and cheer her on to her successful second try-out. Marcy's story is sweet, wholesome, and occasionally moderately comic. Also, it's predictable, trite, and forgettable. Nevertheless, it should have an audience. Ellen Ramsay, Amphitheater High School, Tucson, Ariz .
