11-year-old James and his young brother Raphael are sent to a huge castle in the country to escape the wartime raids that are hitting Edinburgh. There they meet other evacuees and explore the castle and its surroundings. Although they are initially excited to be staying in such a grand location, their feelings soon turn to mistrust and then fear as the suspicion grows that the castle may be haunted.
