Ab Meadows is a horse wrangler forced to seek shelter in a cave during a sudden electrical storm. In the cave he meets Butch Brennan, leader of a notorious outlaw gang. Butch forces Meadows to trade horses, leaving behind the chula mare he is known for riding. The mare and a handful of double eagles force Meadows into an adventure destined to make him an outlaw.

Dane Coolidge was born in Natick, Massachusetts, but moved early to northern California. The New York Times Book Review commented in 1939 that "no other man in the field today writes better Western tales than Dane Coolidge." Coolidge, who died in 1940, wrote with a definite grace and leisurely pace all but lost to the Western story after the Second World War.
