Presence of Mind

In Presence of Mind Chess Hanrahan, private detective in New York City, at first meets an old high school flame, and was going to have dinner with a friend and fellow detective - but finds him dead. He later crosses mental swords with two high-ranking State Department diplomats, Kevin Haining and Maximilian Ordway, authors of a controversial peace treaty with the Soviets. Hanrahan suspects there is more behind the treaty than mere haggling. The clue is a statuette made of paperclips and several helpings of "cognitive dissonance.
