Sufferance is the twenty-ninth Cyrus Skeen detective novel, set in San Francisco in mid-March 1928. Skeen has moved into his new office in the Humboldt Bank Building on Market Street - a vast improvement over his Howard Street office - and is settling into to his new working environment, with a new secretary, Martha Happer.
He is congratulated by many people, including his attorney, Millard Rouse, and by Roz Price, Skeen's sometime romantic interest, who asks an unusual question that puts their relationship at risk. But then envoys from the Society for Popular Justice secure an interview with him. It's new trouble. They want him to join their vigilante club.
