A Parliamentary Affair

(1994)
A novel by

As the dust settles after a general election, four Members of Parliament head for Westminster. Elaine Stalker MP, married with a teenage daughter, has worked hard for her success. But the unequivocally masculine atmosphere of the House of Commons is a hostile environment for an attractive, ambitious woman and Elaine is disappointed when her obvious talents are ignored. Andrew Muncastle, on the other hand, slides easily into the approved style and begins his rise up the ladder, hardly noticing the pressure on his unhappy wife Tessa and their young son. Relishing his powerful role as wheeler-deeler, whip Roger Dickson provides a sympathetic ear for Elaine's frustrations. At first their relationship is strictly professional; but a passion for politics proves an aphrodisiac and latenight sittings offer ample opportunities for discussions of a more private nature. Sir Nigel Boswood, muchloved and admired, simply wants to end his career with distinction. But his respectable image masks a tragic weakness and a sordid sexual scandal puts his reputation at risk. Thrown together in the hot-house of Westminster, all four learn that ambition can exact too high a price.
