In the spring of 1864 the Union once more set out to conquer the Shenandoah Valley, long regarded as the breadbasket of the Confederacy. With Southern armies hard pressed in both the east and the west, Major General John C. Breckinridge, a former vice-president of the United States and commander of the Confederate Department of West Virginia called upon the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute to join in the defense of the Valley. Among the 257 cadets who marched north in May of 1864 is Ethan Wynn, age 16. Like his fellow cadets, he greets Breckinridges summon as both an adventure and a challenge, one he dare not fail in.
