In this adventure, Doc has teamed up once again with his best and possibly his only true friend, Deke Lannister. Together they will go on a journey unlike any that Deke has ever made. Together they will find much more than they had ever expected, and far more than either of them ever wanted.
Doc has been given word that Gomdah, the old healer of the Ute people and the man that restored Doc back to health after the near-fatal mauling by the Killing Shadow, is weak and growing weaker daily. He is not expected to live much longer. At the insistence of Doc, Deke is persuaded to join him on the journey to be with the old healer during his final days. But what they discover along the way and upon arriving will be more than just a dying old man. Pieces in the mountains are moving that will affect not only all of the Ute people, but also neighboring tribes and all who live in those parts of the mountains.
Hanskah, chief of the Utes, knows parts of the whole; Doc and his friend have learned other parts on their way to the village. With a dying Gomdah bravely acting as the needed go-between, Hanskah makes a request of Doc that he never believed himself capable of requesting from anyone…let alone a white man. But Doc was the one who rid the people of a fearsome and terrible threat before. Now he was being asked to help once more, but the threat is so much greater this time.
After agreeing to help in the way that Hanskah has requested, the pair set out to do what neither of them have any desire to do, but circumstances and common sense changes their plans as they travel deeper into the mountains than either have ever been before. And it all changes at a place known for generations as the place behind the water. There, a new plan will be devised. Not one that Hanskah will approve of, but one that Doc and his friend will be able to live with…if they survive.
