"Well, what will it be lass? I've no time to waste. You take this or go to prison for your debts. it's a good contract. I'll pay you the going rate, it will cover your debts and give you some in your pocket. You work for me for three years, I pay for your board and keep during that time, you'll have your own room and it will get you to where you want to go. When the time is up, you choose to stay or leave. Up to you."
They were not her debts but no one was listening. "What does indentured mean exactly?"
"For three years, you do what I say, you are my servant. Make your money last, there will be no more. You will not be able to find other work and you cannot leave me until the contract is up. If you do or fail to do your work commitment, it is punishment by the law."
"I do not know you."
"You didn't know the man in your room but you still stole from him."
"I did no such thing. I keep telling you all. I've no idea what he was doing there!"
"He was there so you could pay off your hotel bill. They say you invited him up for some fun."
"I would never do that! I was brought up respectable."
"And yet you were living in a Saloon." The older man wasn't lying. She had been. Was still living in a Saloon it was the only place to rent a room.
How this had happened she had no idea. One minute she was packing for the next Stage and then she was taken to jail under a stealing charge. She'd never been in trouble in her life. And then found a whole story that she knew nothing about and no one listening to her.
The man had been in her room going through her things.
She'd called the saloon manager while the man just stood there. Not at all concerned. When she found her money missing, the hotel manager called the sheriff and accused her of being in cahoots with the man in her room and unable to pay for her hotel bill.
The whole thing was crazy. Bur she couldn't seem to get out of it. Now she had no money and a debt. And this was the only option open to her.
"I will do the work but I will do no more than that." She told the man the Sheriff referred to as a 'Pilgrim.' She knew what that meant. This older man had little idea of living in this world. He was a traveler. Luckily for her, going in the right direction.
"Girl you are too young for an old man like me. I like my woman with some meat on their bones. Now what will it be? I need to get going."
"I'm the victim here!" She told both the Sheriff and the Pilgrim. "They or he stole from me!"
"Doesn't matter, the outcome is the same." The Sheriff told her.
She sighed. They were never going to listen. "l'll sign."
