When Alex Peterson a thirteen year old boy with terminal cancer wakes from a coma; he tells a story of a wonderful place he was taken to whilst unconscious. Readily, and with total conviction, he talks about the angels he encountered there. Telling his mum, (Megan Peterson) he has been chosen by them to restore faith to the world.
Alex knows he can speak fluently in Hebrew, a language he has never learnt, as well as having the power to heal even the terminally ill.
At first his mum assumed it was all a dream, making her reluctant to talk about, or acknowledge what he said.
Then she meets and falls in love with Vincent, a shy quiet man who teaches religion and ancient languages at London's university. Vincent's belief in Alex is steadfast after the boy brought him back from the brink of certain death. With his help, Megan slowly begins to come to terms with just how powerful and dangerous her sons newly acquired gift is.
It's when Alex cures a top politician of a fatal illness; news of his gift spreads like wildfire and suddenly everyone wants to see him. The knock on effect is overwhelming for all but him.
However, despite his miracles not everyone sees him as a true healer and prophet, including the Pope and some of the church hierarchy, especially after Alex condemns the way in which the church deals with certain issues.
His mother's fears for his safety grow when he proves to the world and the church, he is the real thing. Despite Alex's assurances that an angel called Saul will protect them she still struggles to cope.
Vincent's sister Felicity a Fleet Street journalist; gives Alex her word that the people will know the truth. Despite a bitter personal feud building between her and a rival reporter she is unfaltering in her belief in Alex. Not only because he saved her brother's life, but because she witnessed firsthand the angels who now watch over him.
Over time, the people who have helped Alex slowly begin to realise that like him, they too were chosen. It's not long before things start to happen in their own lives, and they begin to reap rewards. Not with money, but with more important things.
