The United States Foreign Legion's washouts, criminals and unsuccessful deserters go into the Black Gangs – labor groups sent at gunpoint to work in places nobody else will. Reluctant Legion soldier Paul Mullins almost ended up in one. Now he's guarding them. First priority: prevent escapes. Second priority: maintain discipline.
