New Orleans in the 1920's is full of corruption and darkness, and Del Dubois, a black jazz pianist, finds himself a victim to the corruption and prejudice of the city. Arrested and charged with murder, he turns to his San Francisco childhood friend Meg Wagstaff for help. She is confronted by Gabe St. Clair, a New Orleans native and member of a respected and prominent family, who is the city attorney and confident of Del's guilt. As Meg sets off to prove Del's innocence, she captures Gabe's heart as she forces him to confront his prejudices. As Gabe begins to recognize the corruptness and darkness around him, he begins to see the light through Meg, and together they strive to prove Del's innocence.
