Manhattan 1938

Patrick McGuire, a muscled cop turned private eye, is about to leave his office when a blonde bombshell bursts through the door claiming her husband has been murdered. Though he's skeptical, she produces a red stiletto covered in blood and frantically tells her story.

But Patrick's keen intuition tells him she's bending the truth and gives her fair warning.

"You know what I did to the last woman who tried to pull a fast one on me?" he asks, lowering his voice and locking her eyes in a steely gaze. "I spanked her!"

With her face flushing, Ruby Rose stares back at him in disbelief. But she's desperate, and the tough, take-charge detective is her only hope. She finally admits her husband was probably involved with the mob, but the evidence points to her being the guilty party.

To her great relief he agrees to take her case.

But can he protect her from both the law and the ruthless gangsters?
